Born in Philadelphia in 1953, Robert Picardo trained at Yale and started with a memorable turn as a self-loathing werewolf in The Howling (1981). He became a fixture of Steven Spielberg's Amblin family with Innerspace (1987), then anchored two long runs on television: the ABC drama China Beach and, most enduringly, as the acerbic Emergency Medical Hologram, The Doctor, on Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001). He has continued into voice work and independent film. Dry, precise and comically self-important, he is one of American genre television's most quietly loved character leads.
