At the beige, fluorescent-lit Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin paper company, a documentary crew captures the daily grind of a sales office presided over by its cringe-inducing manager, Michael Scott. Desperate to be loved and convinced he is a comic genius, Michael torments and endears himself to a staff of salesmen, accountants, and eccentrics who trade deadpan glances straight to camera. Amid the tedium bloom office romances, petty rivalries, and moments of unexpected tenderness, most enduringly the slow-burning courtship of Jim and Pam. Shot in a faux-documentary style, the American reinvention turns workplace monotony into one of television's warmest and most quotable comedies.
