Hyacinth Bucket, who insists the name is pronounced Bouquet, dedicates her life to social climbing: candlelight suppers, the right china, the right neighbours and a permanent campaign to keep her working-class siblings Daisy, Onslow and Rose out of sight. Roy Clarke wrote the sitcom for BBC One, where five series aired between 1990 and 1995, with Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth and Clive Swift as her thoroughly cowed husband Richard. It became one of the most widely exported British comedies of its era.
