Ron Howard's 'Splash' is a delightful romantic fantasy-comedy that helped make stars of Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. Hanks plays a lonely New Yorker who falls for a beautiful woman unaware she is the mermaid who saved his life as a boy, while a manic scientist (Eugene Levy) tries to expose her. Sweet, funny and buoyed by Hanks's everyman charm, it was a major hit and an early triumph for the Disney-adjacent Touchstone label. A warm, evergreen crowd-pleaser.
