Ransom

“Someone is going to pay.”
6.7 /10 (2,158) Rage 1996 2h 1m
Action Thriller
Director Ron Howard
Screenplay Richard Price, Alexander Ignon
Mel Gibson plays a wealthy airline executive whose young son is kidnapped for ransom, and who, after cooperating with police at first, makes the explosive decision to instead publicly broadcast the ransom money as a bounty on the kidnappers' heads rather than pay them, a gamble that escalates the danger to his son but refuses to reward the crime. Director Ron Howard builds the film as a tense psychological standoff between Gibson's increasingly unpredictable father and Gary Sinise's calculating, embittered former cop turned kidnapper. The film's willingness to have its hero take a genuinely dangerous, morally ambiguous gamble with his own child's life distinguished it from more formulaic kidnapping thrillers of the era. It was a substantial commercial success and remains one of the more tightly constructed entries in Gibson's 1990s run of star-vehicle thrillers.
