James Gunn's 'Super' is a pitch-black superhero comedy in which a meek short-order cook, played by Rainn Wilson, reinvents himself as the deranged vigilante Crimson Bolt after his wife leaves him for a drug dealer. Armed with a wrench and a disturbing lack of restraint, he's joined by a manic sidekick played by Ellen Page. Violent, uncomfortable and tonally jarring, it deconstructs the wannabe-hero fantasy with genuine cruelty and pathos. A cult item, it previewed Gunn's talent for mixing brutality with heart.
