Akira Kurosawa's landmark drama reconstructs a single violent crime — the death of a samurai and the assault of his wife — through four irreconcilable eyewitness accounts, including the bandit's own boastful confession, delivered by a ferocious Toshiro Mifune. Each retelling casts its narrator in a flattering light, leaving the woodcutter who found the body, and the audience, unable to locate objective truth. Kurosawa's innovative use of shifting perspective and dappled forest cinematography gave the film — and world cinema — a lasting shorthand for the unreliability of memory and self-interest. Its influence on how stories are told about truth and perception is so pervasive that the "Rashomon effect" entered the English language.
