Daisuke Katō

Daisuke Kato, born in Tokyo in 1911, was one of the most beloved character actors of Japanese classical cinema and a regular in Akira Kurosawa s stock company. Warm, rotund and quietly funny, he is best remembered as Shichiroji, the reliable second-in-command among Kurosawa s Seven Samurai (1954). He also appears in Rashomon (1950), Ikiru (1952) and Yojimbo (1961), and worked prolifically for Yasujiro Ozu, most memorably in Late Autumn (1960). Kato brought humanity and comic warmth to the golden age of the Japanese studios.
