Charlize Theron underwent a dramatic physical transformation, gaining weight and wearing extensive prosthetics, to play Aileen Wuornos, a Florida sex worker who, after years of abuse, killed a string of men and became one of America's most notorious documented female serial killers, in a relationship with a younger woman played by Christina Ricci. Writer-director Patty Jenkins approaches the true story with unusual empathy, refusing to reduce Wuornos to a simple monster while never excusing her violence. Theron's committed, transformative performance won the Academy Award for Best Actress and remains widely considered one of the great screen performances of its decade.
