Johnny Depp disappears into the role of real-life Boston gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger, who cut a secret deal to become an FBI informant while running one of the most violent criminal empires in the city's history. Director Scott Cooper, working from Dick Lehane and Gerard O'Neill's nonfiction account, surrounds Depp with a stacked ensemble including Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Kevin Bacon to trace the corrosive complicity between Bulger and the law enforcement meant to stop him. Depp's chilling, near-unrecognizable performance drew some of the strongest reviews of his later career. The film captures the moral rot of a city where crime and law enforcement became disturbingly indistinguishable.
