Joel Edgerton took the long road: born in Blacktown, Australia, in 1974, he spent years in Sydney theater and local film, including the crime landmark 'Animal Kingdom' (2010), before Hollywood noticed. He had already played young Owen Lars in the 'Star Wars' prequels (2002-2005), a part he reprised in 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'. His breakthrough decade brought the bruised MMA fighter of 'Warrior' (2011), Tom Buchanan in 'The Great Gatsby' (2013) and the quietly devastating 'Loving' (2016). He also writes and directs: 'The Gift' (2015) and 'Boy Erased' (2018) show the same unshowy intelligence that defines his acting.
