Billy Wilder's foundational film noir stars Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman seduced by a bored, calculating housewife, played by Barbara Stanwyck, into murdering her husband for the payout — a scheme that begins to unravel under the suspicion of MacMurray's own colleague, a sharp claims investigator played by Edward G. Robinson. Co-written by Wilder and hardboiled novelist Raymond Chandler, the film's clipped, cynical dialogue and shadowy visual style established many of the genre conventions that would define film noir for decades. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, it remains one of the most influential and frequently studied films of the era. 'Double Indemnity' is widely considered the archetype of the femme fatale murder-scheme thriller.
