Billy Wilder's Best Picture winner stars Jack Lemmon as a lonely insurance clerk who climbs the corporate ladder by lending his apartment to executives for their extramarital affairs, and Shirley MacLaine as the elevator operator he falls for, who turns out to be involved with his womanizing boss. Wilder balances the film's cynical comedy about corporate moral rot with genuine tenderness, never letting the satire overwhelm the aching loneliness at its center. Widely regarded as one of the finest American films of its era, it remains a high-water mark for tonal control in mainstream studio filmmaking.
