Merlí

8.6 /10 (1,182) 2015–2018
Comedy Drama
Creator Héctor Lozano
Screenplay Héctor Lozano
Merlí Bergeron is a sharp-tongued, unconventional philosophy teacher who blows into a Barcelona high school and refuses to teach by the book, provoking his students to question everything about the world and themselves. Naming each lesson after a great thinker, he pushes teenagers to challenge authority, confront their desires and think for themselves, often to the dismay of parents and colleagues. His methods grow thornier at home, where he shares a fraught roof with his mother and his introverted teenage son Bruno, who is quietly grappling with his own identity. A warm, provocative Catalan drama, it makes philosophy feel urgent and alive while tracing the messy emotional lives of adolescents and the flawed, charismatic mentor who upends them.
