In the working-class sprawl of Bristol, a rowdy circle of teenagers hurtles through parties, drugs, sex and heartbreak while the adults in their lives fumble hopelessly on the sidelines. Each episode hands the spotlight to a different member of the group, peeling back the bravado to expose eating disorders, mental illness, family breakdown and the raw ache of growing up. Rotating its entire cast every couple of seasons, the show captured successive waves of British youth with unusual candor and rare tenderness. Frank, chaotic and often heartbreaking, it became a defining, boundary-pushing portrait of adolescence in all its messy, luminous excess.
