Dick Wolf's original procedural has run for decades on the same durable formula: half an episode with the NYPD chasing a suspect, half with prosecutors in the DA's office fighting to convict them. Its current era pairs Tony Goldwyn's DA with an investigative and legal bench that includes Reid Scott, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, and Odelya Halevi, still ripping cases from real headlines. Nearly every major crime drama since 1990 owes something to its two-act structure and its refusal to dwell on cops' personal lives over the work itself. Few shows have proven this durable, or this adaptable to whatever New York happens to be anxious about.
