Deadwood dramatizes the birth of a Dakota Territory gold camp, tracing how a lawless huddle of tents and mud calcifies into a town with courts, newspapers, and property lines. Ian McShane's Al Swearengen, saloon owner and self-appointed power broker, and Timothy Olyphant's Seth Bullock, a hardware-store owner drawn back into lawkeeping, anchor a sprawling ensemble that includes Molly Parker's genteel widow Alma Garret and Jim Beaver's steady Ellsworth. David Milch's writing renders frontier speech as its own Shakespearean dialect, thick with profanity and cadence rather than period pastiche. Grim, funny, and morally unresolved, it remains one of television's great studies of civilization forming out of greed.
