Peter Lorre

With his bulging eyes and insinuating voice, Peter Lorre created a type of unsettling, unforgettable villain of classic cinema. Born in 1904 in present-day Slovakia, he shot to European fame playing the chilling child murderer of Fritz Lang's 'M'. A refugee from Nazism, he remade his career in Hollywood as a first-rate supporting player in classics such as 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'Casablanca', often alongside Sydney Greenstreet. His range, between the sinister and the pathetic, made him a master of ambiguous and tormented characters. He died in 1964, leaving an indelible silhouette in film noir.
