Steven Lisberger's science-fiction adventure was a pioneering showcase for early computer-generated imagery, blending traditional animation with then-groundbreaking CGI to visualize its glowing digital landscapes. A box-office disappointment on release that was even controversially disqualified from Visual Effects Oscar consideration for 'cheating' with computers, it has since been recognized as a foundational work of digital-era science fiction.
