Director Simon Wells, a great-grandson of author H.G. Wells, updates the classic novel's Victorian science-fiction premise with modern effects work and an expanded, more action-driven third act. Reviews found it visually handsome but dramatically thin compared to its literary source, a serviceable rather than definitive adaptation.
