Sam Raimi's stylized Western stars Sharon Stone as a mysterious gunslinger who rides into the lawless town of Redemption to compete in a quick-draw tournament run by the tyrannical Herod (Gene Hackman), whose death her father suffered years before. Among the competitors is a young Leonardo DiCaprio as a cocky sharpshooter and Russell Crowe as a reformed gunman-turned-preacher. Raimi brings his trademark whip-pans and heightened visual flair to the genre, treating the duels as near-supernatural showdowns. A box-office underperformer at the time, it has since been reassessed as a gleefully operatic riff on Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns.
