Batman, Lieutenant Gordon, and district attorney Harvey Dent form an alliance that finally has Gotham's organized crime on the ropes. But their progress awakens an adversary with no face and no comprehensible motive: the Joker, an anarchist who seeks neither money nor power, but to prove that any honorable man collapses with the right push. Christopher Nolan elevates superhero cinema to the level of the great crime thriller, with a hypnotic Heath Ledger who turns chaos into philosophy. Dark, tense, and morally dizzying, it is a reckoning of just how far one can fall to save a city.
