Leonard Shelby hunts the man who raped and murdered his wife, but his search carries a devastating impairment: since that very night he suffers from a condition that prevents him from forming new memories, so he forgets everything every few minutes. To keep from losing the thread he tattoos clues onto his skin, takes photographs, and writes notes deciding whom to trust. Nolan tells the story backward, with scenes that move back in time, immersing the viewer in the same disorientation the protagonist suffers, unable to know who is manipulating him. A neo-noir thriller of dazzling narrative engineering about memory, revenge, and the lies we tell ourselves to carry on.
