Director David Wain balances raunchy studio comedy with a surprisingly sincere emotional arc about the mentors growing up alongside the kids they're meant to be helping. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, fresh off 'Superbad', steals scenes as the medieval-fantasy LARPer whose imaginary kingdom becomes the film's unexpectedly earnest emotional centerpiece. 'Role Models' became a modest sleeper hit and a frequently cited favorite of the late-2000s R-rated comedy wave.
