A New Year's Eve cruise ship is capsized by a massive rogue wave in this remake of the 1972 disaster classic, forcing a handful of survivors — led by Kurt Russell's former firefighter and Josh Lucas's professional gambler — to climb up through the overturned ship toward the hull, now facing the sky. Director Wolfgang Petersen, working with a much larger budget than the original, stages the initial capsizing as a genuinely terrifying, sustained set piece before settling into a fairly straightforward survival trek. It underperformed at the box office despite the spectacle, remembered mostly for that opening sequence rather than what follows.
