Wolfgang Petersen

Wolfgang Petersen was a German director born in Emden, celebrated for tense, technically accomplished thrillers and disaster epics on both sides of the Atlantic. Das Boot, an intensely claustrophobic account of a German U-boat crew during World War II, established his international reputation and remains one of the most acclaimed war films ever made, earning multiple Academy Award nominations. In the Line of Fire and Air Force One brought his gift for sustained tension to major Hollywood thrillers starring Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford respectively, while The Perfect Storm and Troy showed his command of large-scale disaster and historical epic spectacle. The NeverEnding Story, an earlier German fantasy production, became a beloved family classic distinct from his later thriller-focused Hollywood career. Petersen's ability to translate German technical precision into commercially dominant American blockbuster filmmaking made him one of the most successful European directors to cross into Hollywood.
