From a story conceived by M. Night Shyamalan, this claustrophobic horror thriller traps five strangers inside a stalled high-rise elevator in Philadelphia, where a string of increasingly gruesome, seemingly impossible deaths convinces a detective monitoring them via camera that one of the trapped passengers is literally the Devil in disguise. Director John Erick Dowdle confines almost the entire film to the tiny elevator car, ratcheting tension through paranoid accusations and blackouts rather than elaborate gore. A modest hit as the first entry in Shyamalan's 'Night Chronicles' anthology series, it delivers a lean, effective B-movie premise without overstaying its welcome.
