Michael Haneke's coolly disturbing thriller stars Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche as a comfortable Parisian couple terrorized by anonymous surveillance tapes left on their doorstep, footage that dredges up a buried, shameful episode from the husband's past. More interested in guilt, colonial history and complicity than in easy answers, it withholds resolution and implicates the viewer. A Cannes directing winner, it's a masterful, unnerving puzzle that rewards close attention.
