Ridley Scott directs this stylish crime thriller in which two New York cops escort a Yakuza prisoner to Osaka, only to lose him and become entangled in a gang war. Michael Douglas plays the abrasive detective and Andy Garcia his partner, with Ken Takakura lending dignity as a Japanese officer. Scott drenches the neon-soaked city in rain and steam. The story is routine, but the atmosphere and craftsmanship make it a memorable late-1980s cop picture.
