Born in Pematang Siantar, Indonesia, in 1939, Lo Lieh was a Chinese actor who moved to Hong Kong as a teenager and became one of the defining stars of Shaw Brothers martial-arts cinema. He led Chang Cheh s Golden Swallow (1968) and above all Chung Chang-wha s King Boxer (1972), the film released internationally as Five Fingers of Death that opened the West s appetite for kung fu. He later played the white-eyebrowed villain Pai Mei in Lau Kar-leung s Clan of the White Lotus (1980), directing that film himself. He worked prolifically into the nineties and died in 2002, remembered as a foundational figure of Hong Kong action.

Wang Lap Tat (June 29, 1939 – November 2, 2002), better known by his stage name Lo Lieh, was an Indonesian-born Hong Kong actor, best known as Chao Chih-Hao in King Boxer (1972, aka Five Fingers of Death), Miyamoto in Fist of Fury II (1977) and General Tien Ta in The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978).
