Cliff Curtis is a New Zealand actor of Maori descent from Rotorua who moved from acclaimed local cinema — 'Once Were Warriors' (1994), 'Whale Rider' (2002) — to a prolific Hollywood career playing an astonishing range of ethnicities: Pablo Escobar in 'Blow' (2001), an Iraqi rebel in 'Three Kings' (1999), the gang leader Smiley in 'Training Day' (2001). Television gave him the lead Travis Manawa in 'Fear the Walking Dead' (2015-2017), and James Cameron cast him as the reef clan chief Tonowari in 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (2022). His quiet, grounded intensity makes him endlessly castable.
