Yoshio Tsuchiya, born in Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1927, was a versatile Toho actor and a mainstay of Kurosawa s stock company. He is best remembered as the anxious young peasant Rikichi in Seven Samurai (1954) and as the pushed-around lieutenant Tadokoro in The Hidden Fortress (1958), and he also appears in Yojimbo (1961) and Sanjuro (1962). In parallel he became a favourite of Ishiro Honda s tokusatsu cinema, playing the alien controller in Battle in Outer Space (1959) and returning across multiple Godzilla films through the 1960s. Warm, curious and adaptable, Tsuchiya was one of the essential character men of Toho s golden age.
