Grad student Quentin Coldwater has always taken refuge in a series of childhood fantasy novels about a magical land called Fillory, until he's recruited to Brakebills, a secret university where magic is real and dangerously difficult to master. As he and his brilliant, damaged classmates learn to bend reality through arduous spellcraft, they discover that the enchanted world of their favorite books exists too, and that its horrors are anything but make-believe. Darker and more adult than the fairy tales it riffs on, the series blends grad-school angst, addiction, and trauma with portal-fantasy adventure. Clever and unpredictable, it asks what happens when the escapist dreams of childhood turn out to be lethally real.
