Bernard Black, the foul-tempered, permanently soused proprietor of a chaotic London bookshop, treats customers as an inconvenience and cleanliness as a personal insult, yet somehow keeps his business — and his friendships — intact. Dylan Moran plays Bernard with gleeful misanthropy, Bill Bailey's sweet, hapless Manny absorbs the abuse as his devoted assistant, and Tamsin Greig's Fran drifts in from next door to enable both of their worst impulses. Co-created by Moran and Graham Linehan, the sitcom mines its tiny cast and single grubby set for a surprising density of absurdist gags. Across three short seasons, it became a beloved cult classic of British comedy precisely because it never tried to be bigger than itself.

Cooking the Books
Bernard’s dodgy accountant has to go on the run, leaving him ill prepared to fill out his own tax return. In fact Bernard would rather do anything than fill it out.

Manny's First Day
After Manny’s help with the tax return Bernard is persuaded to hire him in the shop. Unfortunately he actually sells some books, much to Bernard’s annoyance.

Bernard and Manny accept a house-sitting job to get away from their new cleaner. They also drink some wine.
