American commander Emma Green leads the first crewed mission to Mars, a three-year international voyage that forces her to leave her husband and teenage daughter on Earth just as a family crisis hits. Created by Andrew Hinderaker and inspired by Chris Jones's Esquire article, 'Away' premiered on Netflix in 2020 with Hilary Swank heading a crew of Russian, Chinese, Indian and British astronauts. The single-season drama alternates the claustrophobic dangers of deep space, from failing water systems to blindness, with the quieter ache of a family learning to function across millions of miles.
