Once the toast of Orange County, the Bluths lose their real-estate fortune overnight when patriarch George Sr. is arrested for fraud, leaving level-headed son Michael to shepherd a clan of spectacularly self-absorbed relatives who refuse to accept that the money is gone. Between his scheming mother, his magician brother, his perpetually unemployed brother-in-law, and a never-nude analrapist orbiting the family, Michael's every attempt to do the right thing is sabotaged by the people he's trying to save. Told through mock-documentary voiceover and dense with running gags, callbacks, and buried jokes that reward obsessive rewatching, it's a densely layered farce about the ties that strangle. The result is one of television's most influential comedies, a masterclass in intricate plotting disguised as chaos.
