Born in Riverside, California, in 1989, Alia Shawkat began acting as a child before achieving cult fame as Maeby Funke on Mitchell Hurwitz's Arrested Development (2003). She reinvented herself as a leading indie presence, co-writing and starring in the female-friendship comedy Search Party (2016) across five seasons. On film she headlined the queer romance Duck Butter (2018) opposite Laia Costa and appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice (2014) and Blake Edwards-inflected sleeper The Old Man & the Gun (2018). Her screen work favors sharp, slightly deadpan characters with an anxious, urban intelligence.
