Born in New York in 1925, he dazzled as Marlon Brando's brother in the famous taxi scene of 'On the Waterfront'. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his racist Southern police chief in 'In the Heat of the Night', alongside Sidney Poitier, and delivered a heartrending portrait of a Holocaust survivor in 'The Pawnbroker'. His range, committed and often explosive, took him from memorable villains such as the one in 'Doctor Zhivago' to countless character roles. He died in 2002 after a long and chameleonic career.
