Rip Torn

A formidable American character actor from Texas whose long career ran from prestige drama to broad comedy before his death in 2019. Trained in the intense Method tradition, he was equally at home playing menace and buffoonery, and he found late-career fame as the gruff Zed heading the alien-hunting agency in 'Men in Black' (1997) and 'Men in Black II' (2002); he also lent his voice to Disney's 'Hercules' (1997). A gravel-voiced, unpredictable presence, he brought a live-wire edge to everything from the stage to the multiplex.
