Rik Mayall, born in Harlow in 1958, was the anarchic engine behind the alternative comedy wave that reshaped British humour in the eighties. He co-created and starred in The Young Ones (1982) and Bottom (1991), swaggered as Lord Flashheart across two runs of Blackadder, and skewered Thatcherite politics as the odious MP Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman (1987). On the big screen he headlined the cult favourite Drop Dead Fred (1991), turning imaginary friend into pure chaos. His sudden death in 2014 left a whole generation of British comics openly in his debt.
