An extravagant, much-derided romantic fantasy, marking Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut and adapted from Mark Helprin's dense novel. In a mythic early-1900s New York, a thief (Colin Farrell) falls for a dying heiress, aided by a magical flying white horse and pursued by a demonic gangster (Russell Crowe), across a century-spanning tale of miracles and destiny. Wildly overstuffed and tonally chaotic, it was a critical and commercial disaster that struggled to render its whimsy coherent.
