A big, bombastic World War II drama directed by John Woo. Nicolas Cage plays a shell-shocked Marine assigned to protect a Navajo code talker (Adam Beach) in the Pacific, with secret orders to kill him rather than let the unbreakable code fall into enemy hands. The premise is compelling, but Woo swamps the moral heart in operatic gunfire. A costly box-office disappointment that squandered a genuinely interesting piece of history.
