George Lucas conceived this fantasy epic, in which the evil sorceress-queen Bavmorda hunts a prophesied infant destined to end her reign, and an unassuming farmer with dreams of becoming a sorcerer, played by Warwick Davis, is thrust into protecting her on a perilous journey. Director Ron Howard leans into old-fashioned, practical-effects fantasy filmmaking, pairing Davis's reluctant hero with Val Kilmer's roguish swordsman Madmartigan in a classic mismatched-partners dynamic. Though it underperformed at the box office against the era's blockbusters, 'Willow' became a beloved cult favorite for a generation raised on VHS, later spawning a 2022 sequel series. Its blend of Tolkien-esque world-building and Lucas's populist adventure instincts made it a formative touchstone of 1980s fantasy cinema.
