In a sleepy Iowa town where nothing ever changes, a young grocery clerk shoulders the weight of a family that cannot function without him: a housebound mother crushed by grief and weight, and a beloved, unpredictable brother approaching a milestone birthday. The arrival of a free-spirited traveler passing through offers him a fleeting glimpse of a life beyond his obligations. Lasse Hallström crafts a tender, unhurried portrait of quiet desperation and reluctant love, elevated by Johnny Depp's aching restraint and Leonardo DiCaprio's astonishing early performance. Gentle and deeply humane, it finds profound feeling in the smallest of stifled American lives.
