Lasse Hallstrom's warm, sumptuous food-and-culture drama, produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, follows an Indian immigrant family who open a restaurant in a French village directly across from a Michelin-starred establishment run by an imperious owner, played by Helen Mirren. A rivalry over cuisine slowly thaws into respect and romance. Gentle, predictable and beautifully photographed, it is comfort-food cinema, an appealing crowd-pleaser that never strays far from the expected recipe.
