Stephen Daldry adapts Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer-winning novel into an interlocking triptych spanning three eras: Virginia Woolf writing 'Mrs. Dalloway' in 1923, a 1950s housewife reading it, and a modern-day New York woman living out its themes. Nicole Kidman, wearing a prosthetic nose, won the Best Actress Oscar as Woolf, anchoring a cast that also includes Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep in a meditation on depression, suppressed identity, and the quiet desperation beneath domestic life. Philip Glass's hypnotic score ties the three timelines together into one of the most acclaimed literary adaptations of its decade.
