In the segregated America of the 1960s, two daring African American entrepreneurs, Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris, hatch a plan as brilliant as it is risky: to buy banks and real estate and open up access to housing and credit for their community. To get around the racism of the financial system, they hire a white working-class man to serve as the public face of their operations. Based on a true story, this is a period drama about the fight for integration and for a piece of the American dream, told with elegant style and a current of protest running beneath.
