Clive Owen plays the enigmatic Mr. Smith, a carrot-chewing gunman who delivers a woman's baby in the middle of a shootout and then dedicates himself to protecting the infant from an army of assassins led by a cynical hitman, played by Paul Giamatti, hired to kill the child for mysterious political reasons. Director Michael Davis pushes the action to gleefully over-the-top extremes, staging gunfights during sex scenes, skydiving jumps, and increasingly absurd set pieces that treat the entire film as a live-action cartoon rather than a grounded thriller. The film's tongue-in-cheek self-awareness and sheer creative excess in its action choreography earned it a devoted cult following even as mainstream critics were divided on its tone. It stands as one of the most purely, unapologetically ridiculous action films of the mid-2000s.
