Sara and Jonathan, played by Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack, share an instant, electric connection while shopping for gloves in New York, but rather than exchange numbers, Sara insists on testing fate by writing her number in a book she then sells to a stranger, leaving their reunion to chance. Years later, both are engaged to other people, yet still haunted by that one encounter, prompting each to separately chase the increasingly improbable trail of clues that might reunite them. The film leans fully into fated-romance whimsy over realism, treating coincidence and destiny as genuine narrative forces rather than mere plot convenience. It became a beloved entry in the early-2000s romantic comedy wave, its title becoming shorthand for chance encounters that might just be meant to be.
