Julia Roberts plays Maggie Carpenter, a small-town woman who has left three different grooms at the altar and becomes a national punchline after a cynical New York columnist, played by Richard Gere, writes a scathing piece about her without bothering to fact-check it. When his facts are challenged and he's forced to retract the story, he travels to her hometown to investigate properly ahead of her fourth impending wedding, and predictably falls for the woman he'd mocked from afar. Reuniting the leads and director Garry Marshall a decade after 'Pretty Woman', the film leaned on that earlier chemistry to become a substantial box-office hit despite mixed reviews. It remains one of the most recognizable romantic comedies of the late 1990s star-vehicle era.
